Dozens of Hizb at-Tahrir (Liberation Party) members and supporters were either wounded or arrested when Palestinian Authority (PA) security forces suppressed marches they were participating in on Saturday in al-Khalil and Jenin.
The marches were held to commemorate the 97th anniversary of the destruction of the Islamic caliphate.
Local sources told the Palestinian Information Center (PIC) that PA security forces blocked the main road leading to Bin Rushd traffic circle in al-Khalil city and then embarked on firing live ammunition and attacking the participants with volleys of tear gas grenades.
In Jenin another march organized by Hizb at-Tahri was also suppressed by PA security forces outside the Grand Mosque of Jenin.
Several participants in the marches were reportedly arrested during the events.
The PA security forces attacked the marches although the organizers had received official permission allowing them to hold peaceful marches in the West Bank to mark the anniversary.
