PPS: Palestinian prisoners suffer double deprivation in Israeli jails

Monday 25-May-2020

The Palestinian Prisoner Society (PPS) has said that the Palestinian prisoners are facing double deprivation this year as the Israeli prison service continues to ban family visits to jails since last March as a preventive measure against the spread of coronavirus.

In a statement on its website PPS accused the Israeli authorities of denying the majority of the Palestinian prisoners of their rights to talk with their families over the phone despite its recent decision to allow them to contact their relatives following pressures by human rights groups.

Under normal circumstances the Israeli prison service deprives hundreds of families of visiting their relatives in jails for alleged security reasons PPS noted.

Among the prisoners there are about 180 children and 39 women — including 16 mothers — in Israeli jails and all of them are unable to celebrate the Eid al-Fitr occasion with their families according to PPS.
