Palestinian elderly woman dies in Israeli jail

Saturday 2-July-2022

An elderly female prisoner from al-Khalil was pronounced dead on Saturday morning in an Israeli jail. The cause of her death is still unknown.

According to Asra Media Office 68-year-old Saadiya Matar a resident of Idhna town in al-Khalil died during her morning stroll in the prison yard.

Prisoner Matar a mother of four sons and four daughters was kidnaped by the Israeli occupation forces on December 18 2021 after she was assaulted near the Ibrahimi Mosque in the Old City of al-Khalil.

The occupation state accused her at the time of stabbing a Jewish settler near the Ibrahimi Mosque.

She had already been detained during the first Palestinian intifada (uprising) in 1987 and served time as an administrative detainee in 2017.

In this regard the Palestinian Commission of Detainees’ and Ex-Detainees’ Affairs held the Israeli occupation government and its prison service fully responsible for the death of prisoner Saadiya Matar.

Head of the Commission Qadri Abu Baker appealed to the international community to break its immoral and inhumane silence on Israel’s violations against the Palestinian prisoners in its jails.

He said that such international silence encourages Israel to commit more crimes against the Palestinian prisoners.

There are 28 Palestinian women in Damon jail and another one in al-Jalamah interrogation center according to the Commission on Friday.

For his part Hamas spokesman Hazem Qasem described Matar’s death as a full-fledged Israeli crime and a reflection of the “sadistic racist and terrorist behavior” pursed against Palestinian elderly people and patients in Israeli jails.

In press remarks spokesman Matar said that the death of Matar in Damon jail confirmed the size of medical neglect inside Israeli prisons adding that the occupation state persisted in detaining her despite her old age and health condition.

He stressed that this new crime emphasized the need to prosecute Israeli leaders as war criminals at the International Criminal Court.
