Palestinian organizations urge the world to protect Palestinian refugees in Iraq

Monday 12-February-2007

GAZA (PIC)– The public network for the assistance of Palestinian refugees in Iraq has organized Sunday a set-in before the UN headquarters in Gaza city in condemnation of the continued killing of Palestinian refugees at the hand of Iraqi militias in that Arab country.

Tens of public and private organizations participated in the sit-in and called on the international community and human rights organizations to immediately end the tragedy of the Palestinian refugees in that war-torn country.

“Not a single day passes in Iraq without violations against Palestinian refugees there including kidnapping murdering and terrorizing them especially at the Baladeyyat housing complex where the bulk of the refugees live” affirmed Mahmoud Al-Jamali the network coordinator.

During the past four years Jamali explained around 2595 violations against the refugees have been registered which constitute only 75% of the actual crimes committed against them.

He also warned that the rate of violence against the Palestinian refugees reached alarming levels spurring the UNHRC to declare them as the most targeted group amidst the sectarian strife in Iraq.

“What would the world do had the targeted persons were western or Jewish groups?” Jamali questioned urging Palestinians worldwide to stand up in defense of their Palestinian brethren in Iraq.

Before ending the activity Jamali handed a letter to UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon through the UN representative in Gaza urging him to immediately take all the necessary measures to ensure safety of the refugees and to spare them any further attacks.

Armed Iraqi gangs and militias widely believed to be sanctioned by the American occupiers in Iraq and Israel’s external intelligence apparatus (the Mossad) which is active in Iraq murdered around 200 Palestinian refugees since Baghdad fell under US occupation in 2003. Scores others were arrested and detained in Iraqi and US-administered jails.
