Ein al-Sakut was a beautiful Palestinian village located near the Jordanian borders with occupied Palestine until it was occupied by Israel in 1967.
After expelling the Palestinian citizens from that village the Israeli occupation authorities (IOA) started building settlements in the village lands and surrounded it with landmines.
Activist Aref Daraghmeh told the PIC reporter that the IOA built Mehola settlement in the place of al-Sakut village after seizing 30000 dunums of its land while a large portion of the land were allocated for planting minefields along the Jordanian border.
“The IOA built the first agricultural settlement in 1969 on the land of the village” Daraghmeh said attributing the early settlement project to the beauty of the village and its environs.
Nawal Daraghmeh one of the displaced people of al-Sakut said to our reporter that the IOA removed the minefields near the Jordanian borders ten years ago. She added “Al-Sakut lands were among the areas from which minefields were removed and this gave hope for the displaced people of the village to start a legal battle to return to their lands.”
Though Palestinians are allowed to reach the village now the Israeli settlers still have the upper hand activist Mohammad Abu Allan said proposing enhancing Palestinian internal tourism to the village.
