The activist group Peace Now has warned of an Israeli plan that would lead to the annexation of more Palestinian lands the expansion of settlements and the displacement of thousands of Palestinians from their homes in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.
According to Peace Now on Monday the Jewish National Fund (JNF) is expected to greenlight a review of hundreds of property assets beyond the Green Line many of which hold a similar legal status to homes in the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah.
The JNF’s plan seeks to have Palestinian properties beyond the Green Line registered and such step could lead to the mass eviction of Palestinians from their homes in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.
JNF’s board of directors is slated to meet on Thursday to okay the plan which is aimed at reviewing 17000 property assets across the occupied Palestinian territories that have not been registered to date. The entire project may cost about 100 million shekels ($31 million) and take five years to execute.
According the activist group the proposed project covers properties that were allegedly purchased by the JNF both before and after 1948. These properties are found only in the records of the JNF or affiliated bodies and were never registered with the government.
