Prisoners medically neglected in Israeli jails

Tuesday 28-November-2017

The Palestinian Commission of Detainees’ and Ex-Detainees’ Affairs has accused the Israeli prison service (IPS) of continuing to medically neglect Palestinian prisoners in its jails.

A statement released by the commission on Monday warned that prisoner Jawad Ashtiya suffers from an aggravating eyesight problem and needs corneal transplant surgery as soon as possible.

According to the commission the IPS keeps procrastinating about setting a date for Ashtiya to undergo the surgery although a medical report warns that his vision could suffer significant damage if the operation was delayed.

The prison administration has also been depriving him of appropriate medical care for over 10 years and deliberately refuses to give him saline drops to avoid eye dryness.

Ashtiya from Nablus city has been in jail since 2001 serving a term of 30 years.

Another prisoner called Mohamed Duwaikat also suffers from vision and eye problems and is medically neglected according to the commission.

Duwaikat also from Nablus suffers from very poor eyesight in addition to unbearable inflammations in his eyes and he needs medication and surgical intervention immediately.
