UNRWA staff members rally over U.S. “non-humanitarian” move

UNRWA-run bodies suspended their services in the blockaded Gaza Strip on Tuesday to protest the latest U.S. decision to cut its aids to the agency.

A rally was staged by Gaza’s regional office at UNRWA’s headquarters in Gaza city. Director of UNRWA operation in Gaza Matthias Schmale and the head of the Workers’ Union Amir al-Mesehal along with UNRWA staff members were in attendance.

Schools clinics hospital among other facilities in the besieged enclave joined the one-hour strike.

At the same time a mass rally is expected to be held on Monday in response to the U.S. cut of its aids. UNRWA staff members and representatives of Palestinian factions and NGOs will reportedly join the event.

The U.S. administration announced Tuesday its decision to withdraw 65 million U.S. dollars from UNRWA’s aid budget cutting medical and educational assistance to Palestinian refugees.
