The legitimacy of the Palestinian National Council (PNC) and of the Palestinian Authority (PA) president Mahmoud Abbas is fake political bureau member of Hamas Mahmoud al-Zahhar said on Tuesday.
Al-Zahhar said the PNC excludes representatives from national factions including Hamas and the Islamic Jihad and does not therefore represent the majority.
“Holding a PNC meeting at such an arbitrary time is a sign of the fake legitimacy of Abbas which has expired since 2009” stated al-Zahhar.
Al-Zahhar called for implementing the terms of the reconciliation agreement struck in Cairo and to hold legislative and presidential elections so as to allow the Palestinians no matter their partisan affiliations to democratically cast their votes.
“The Palestinian people and Arab leaders know very well that Abbas’s legitimacy is fake” added al-Zahhar. “The fact that he refused Cairo’s calls to hold PNC élections is a conclusive proof.”
