Dr. Sufyan Tayeh, the President of the Islamic University of Gaza, was killed on Saturday along with his family and a large number of displaced people in a bloody Israeli bombardment of inhabited houses in Al-Falouja area in Jabalia in the northern Gaza Strip.
Dr. Tayeh is a popular Palestinian Professor in theoretical physics and applied mathematics and one of the most prominent and successful figures in the fields of academia and management.
During his career, he was ranked among the top 2% of researchers around the world in 2021, according to local Palestinian academic sources.
Furthermore, he was recipient of the Abdul Hameed Shoman Award for Young Arab Scientists and was appointed holder of the UNESCO Chair for Physical, Astrophysical and Space Sciences in Palestine.
Many activists and academics have mourned Dr. Tayeh and applauded his academic achievements. They opine that Israel deliberately targets Palestinian scientists and academics as part of its punitive war against the Palestinian people.
