A 7.8-magnitude earthquake on Monday killed hundreds of people in southern Türkiye and in neighboring Syria and caused material losses.
Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced that 921 people were killed and more than 5385 were injured after the earthquake shook the province of Kahramanmaras adding that 2470 people were rescued from the ruins of buildings.
President Erdoğan described the earthquake as the country’s “largest disaster” since 1939 when a major quake struck the eastern province of Erzincan.
Meanwhile 547 people including Palestinian refugees in northern Syria were killed while hundreds were injured due to the earthquake.
Eight Palestinian refugees including three children were killed by the recent earthquake that struck Syria according to Palestinian Ambassador to Syria Samir Al-Rifai.
He underlined that the earthquake had caused the deadly collapse of two buildings at Al-Raml Camp in Lattakia Governorate and a retaining wall at Al-Neirab Camp in Aleppo adding that search-and-rescue operations are still underway for dozens of people trapped under the rubble.
For his part spokesman for Action Group for Palestinians of Syria (AGPS) Fayiz Abu Eid said that the two Palestinian children Rahaf Qassem and Raghad Qassem passed away while dozens of Palestinian refugees were injured due to the earthquake.
Hamas and officials from all factions mourned the death of the victims who passed away in the disaster extending their deepest condolences to their families and praying for all Muslim and Arab nations to stay safe from harm.
