The Hamas Movement welcomed on Thursday the position of Colombian President Gustavo Petro who announced severing diplomatic relations with Israel.

In a statement, Hamas said “We highly value the position of President Petro, who announced severing diplomatic relations with the occupying Zionist entity, in light of the continuation of the genocide against our Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.”

Hamas considered the Colombian president’s position “a victory for the sacrifices of our people and their just cause.”

Hamas called on the countries of Latin America and elsewhere to “completely sever their diplomatic relations with the rogue fascist entity that continues its crimes against our people and flouts all international laws and norms.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced that his country would sever its diplomatic relations with Israel, starting Thursday, as a result of its ongoing war on the Gaza Strip.

In a speech delivered during celebrating International Workers’ Day, which marks May 1, in the capital, Bogota, Petro said, “diplomatic relations with the state of Israel will be severed for having a genocidal president and government.”

“It cannot be, it cannot return, the times of genocide, of the extermination of an entire people before our eyes, before our passivity, it cannot come. If Palestine dies, humanity dies,” Petro added.

The ongoing Israeli aggression against Gaza, since October 7, 2023, has left more than 112,000 martyrs and wounded, most of them children and women, and about 10,000 missing people amid famine and massive destruction, according to Palestinian and UN data.

Israel has been continuing its aggression on Gaza despite the issuance of a Security Council’s immediate ceasefire resolution, and in defiance of the International Court of Justice’s ruling demanding it to take immediate measures to prevent “genocide” and improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
