Gaza’s Ministry of Detainees and Ex-Detainees said on Thursday that Palestinian prisoner Omar Junaid, a 26-year-old from Jabalia in northern Gaza, had died last June in an Israeli jail as a result of his exposure to torture.
The prisoner’s father, Abdul-Aziz, told the ministry that he received a phone call today from HaMoked, an Israeli human rights group, saying that his son Omar had died on June 17, 2024 under interrogation.
Prisoner Omar was kidnaped along with his brother Yasser from their home in Jabalia on December 24, 2023, and his family did not know about his fate throughout that period, even after his brother was released in last April.
“We sought help from many human rights organizations inside and outside Gaza to find out his fate, but we had no answer because the occupation authority refused to provide any information about him,” the father said.
“Last May, we contacted the Center for the Defense of the Individual ‘HaMoked’ in Jerusalem, which, in turn, filed a petition with an Israeli court to find out his fate,” he added.
The family said that its son, Omar, had no health problem before Israeli forces kidnaped him from its house, calling for necessarily handing over his body in order to bury him in his hometown in northern Gaza.
