From Balfour to the Nakba

Monday 5-November-2018

The Balfour Declaration was a promise made to the Zionist movement in 1917 by Britain pledging support for a Jewish state in Palestine. It was to be the groundwork for years of subjugation dispossession and conflict.

The Nakba (catastrophe) came 30 years later in 1948 when up to 750000 Palestinians were forcibly expelled from their homes during the creation of the state of Israel.

Not only are the effects of this still felt today by the Palestinian refugees scattered across the world but also the issue in Palestine is ongoing. The ethnic cleansing continues with hundreds of Palestinians losing their homes due to Israel’s expanding settlements the subjugation and oppression continues with Palestinians denied basic rights suffering daily harassment restrictions in their freedom of movement and mass incarceration in Israeli jails.
