Palestinian heritage inherited in the camps of Lebanon

Thursday 5-May-2022

Palestinian families in refugee camps in Lebanon maintain the custom of making Eid cakes as it is one of the most essential images of adherence to the Palestinian heritage on the days of the blessed Muslim Eidul Fitr.

The “Social Support Association” in the Burj al-Barajneh camp Beirut organized a gathering for elderly women; to prepare Eid cakes.

The director of the Association’s Old Age House Sahar Sarhan says: “The making of Eid cakes in Palestinian homes in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon reflects the authenticity of the Palestinian people and their adherence to their cause and heritage despite the long years of asylum.”

She told Quds Press that “the elderly Palestinian women make cakes and distribute them to neighbors and relatives on the first day of Eid and they are also presented to the well-wishing visitors of the association.”

Sarhan stressed that “no matter how long the years pass the voice of the demand to return to Palestine won’t subside and we will remain committed to the right of return and to revive the Palestinian heritage in all its forms until liberation and return.”

She explained that “her association seeks to instill the concept of searching for the authenticity of the Palestinian people by collecting and archiving information through the elderly in order to provide generations generation after generation with everything that can be known about their cause.”

“The Social Support Association in Lebanon is interested in serving the elderly in Palestinian camps and gatherings due to the lack of services provided to them as a result of social and economic conditions” according to Sarhan.

The number of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon is estimated at 200000 according to United Nations estimates most of them are distributed among 12 camps and less numbers in other residential areas in the country.
