In a thin body, protruding chest bones, and a weak voice, the 6-year-old child Fadi Al-Zant appeared in Kamal Adwan Hospital as his health condition has been deteriorating as a result of malnutrition, dehydration, and the lack of appropriate treatment in northern Gaza where famine is hitting unprecedented levels.

Activists launched a campaign on social media platforms to save Fadi, who has been suffering for two months from deteriorating health and losing weight rapidly due to the lack of medicine and food.

At Kamal Adwan Hospital in the town of Beit Lahia, north of the Gaza Strip, the child who suffers from cystic fibrosis since his birth, has recently been at risk of death because of the starvation in northern Gaza. Two of his brothers had previously died of the same disease.

This genetic disease makes patient in urgent need for certain types of food and treatments that have already run out of stock in the northern Gaza Strip such as vegetables, fruits, eggs, and nuts.

Two children lost

Child Fadi has been in hospital for two months, receiving necessary intravenous solutions and having a fumigator device that opens the respiratory tract.

The exhausted mother sits next to her child, with signs of sadness and anxiety obvious on her face fearing the loss of her child.

The mother was overwhelmed with fatigue and exhaustion out of concern over the health challenges that faces her child as she recalls the pain of loss she went through after losing her two children who died of the same disease in the past years, which makes this ordeal increase the burden of her suffering and anxiety.

No food available

Speaking to Anadolu agency, Al-Zant’s mother said, “My child Fadi suffers from cystic fibrosis. In the past two months, his health condition has deteriorated, which required him to stay in hospital.”

This disease requires health care, appropriate treatment, and healthy food, all of which is lacking in the northern Gaza Strip which is currently facing famine, she added.

The mother said, “Fadi is suffering from a difficult health condition. I am afraid of losing him. In the hospital, he relies on the solution and the fumigation device which requires constant electrical current, which is lacking in the besieged Gaza Strip because of war”.

She pointed out that “healthy food is not available, and this causes her child serious health complications specially after he has lost many kilograms of weight.”

The Palestinian woman hopes that food and treatment will be provided for her child, that he will have the opportunity to be treated abroad, and that the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, which has led to the death of 27 children due to malnutrition and lack of treatment, will be put to an end.

As a result of the Israeli war and restrictions, 700,000 Palestinians in Gaza and northern governorates are suffering from severe famine, amid a severe scarcity of food, water, medicine and fuel supplies.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been waging a devastating war on the Gaza Strip, leaving tens of thousands of civilian victims, most of them children and women, in addition to an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe and massive destruction of infrastructure.
