Tent from empty cans & salad from thorns, Gaza women send messages of resilience

Despite being among the vast majority of victims of the brutal aggression on the Gaza Strip, which has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of martyrs, injured, and missing persons, the women of Gaza, despite all the wounds, continue to send messages to the world that the women of Gaza are standing tall against the plots of displacement and uprooting from their land. They are deeply rooted in the earth that has been dyed with the blood of martyrs, which now nourishes the tree of resilience in Gaza, providing it with strength. They undermine the enemy’s projects and those who provide it with weapons and supplies in their day dreams of emptying the land of its inhabitants.

The mind stands bewildered in front of the resilience of the people of Gaza and their innovation of all means of resistance. They build a tent out of thousands of empty cans to convey a message to the world and to the enemy that even if our homes are destroyed, we will rise from nothing to find shelter and remain until we rebuild our homes again.

A second group of women in Gaza creates a “thorny salad” to send a strong message to those who continue the systematic war of starvation against Gaza: “We will remain in our land, even if we eat its thorns, drink its bitterness, and swallow its pain, you will not uproot us from our land.”

A free woman from Gaza tells the world with pride, dignity, and honor, “This is Gaza, the land of prophets and steadfastness. So go ahead and take an inch or a span of land from Gaza or from Al-Aqsa, we are victorious by the will of the Almighty.”

“Our return is an inevitability, and the tent is illusory.” This phrase adorns a tent that was entirely constructed from empty canned food in the Deir al-Balah area in central Gaza Strip. The scene of tents housing Palestinian refugees and crowding the streets and squares has become familiar, except for this tent that carries a different charm.

The canned food tent, built in the area known as the Land of Palm Trees, was adorned with Palestinian flags and its roof was made of palm fronds. On its door, the words “Our return is an inevitability, and the tent is illusory,” were written, and its walls carried the phrase “From a life of negotiations to a life of canned food.”

Dalia Al-Afeefi, the initiator of the canned food tent, said in a statement to the press, “We tried to add some phrases to the walls of the tent to convey messages to the world.”

Al-Afeefi added that almost all of the displaced people in the Land of Palm Trees contributed to the project of building the canned food tent, which was constructed using 13,000 cans.

Since October 7 of last year, the Israeli occupation army has continued its aggression on the Gaza Strip with American and European support. Its warplanes bombard the vicinity of hospitals, buildings, towers, and the homes of Palestinian civilians, destroying them over the heads of their residents. It also prevents the entry of water, food, medicine, and fuel.

The ongoing aggression on Gaza has resulted in the deaths of 33,037 citizens and the injury of 75,668 others, in addition to the displacement of about 85% of the population of the Gaza Strip, according to the authorities of the Strip, as well as international bodies and organizations.
